~We responded to a Wall Street Journal ad for a business for sale. After contacting the owner we asked for some basic documentation. The manner in which the information was provided was so unprofessional and haphazard, we didn't care to look any further into the business.
~We responded to an on-line listing of a business for sale. The owner was totally unprepared to answer the most rudimentary questions and the information she promised to send took so long to get to us, we didn't even bother reviewing it when it finally arrived.
Here's a situation that ultimately ended up being good for us, but not for the seller:
~In summer 2001, we were positioned to acquire a company, but closing was delayed due to the seller not getting documents back to us in a timely manner. Then 9-11 came. Due to the ensuing mayhem, the closing was pushed back for several months, during which time the seller's revenues plummeted. When the acquisition finally closed, it was at a lower price and with terms less favorable to the seller.
